    Gradient-orientation-based PCA subspace for novel face recognition

    This article has been made available through the Brunel Open Access Publishing Fund.Face recognition is an interesting and a challenging problem that has been widely studied in the field of pattern recognition and computer vision. It has many applications such as biometric authentication, video surveillance, and others. In the past decade, several methods for face recognition were proposed. However, these methods suffer from pose and illumination variations. In order to address these problems, this paper proposes a novel methodology to recognize the face images. Since image gradients are invariant to illumination and pose variations, the proposed approach uses gradient orientation to handle these effects. The Schur decomposition is used for matrix decomposition and then Schurvalues and Schurvectors are extracted for subspace projection. We call this subspace projection of face features as Schurfaces, which is numerically stable and have the ability of handling defective matrices. The Hausdorff distance is used with the nearest neighbor classifier to measure the similarity between different faces. Experiments are conducted with Yale face database and ORL face database. The results show that the proposed approach is highly discriminant and achieves a promising accuracy for face recognition than the state-of-the-art approaches

    A novel user-centered design for personalized video summarization

    In the past, several automatic video summarization systems had been proposed to generate video summary. However, a generic video summary that is generated based only on audio, visual and textual saliencies will not satisfy every user. This paper proposes a novel system for generating semantically meaningful personalized video summaries, which are tailored to the individual user's preferences over video semantics. Each video shot is represented using a semantic multinomial which is a vector of posterior semantic concept probabilities. The proposed system stitches video summary based on summary time span and top-ranked shots that are semantically relevant to the user's preferences. The proposed summarization system is evaluated using both quantitative and subjective evaluation metrics. The experimental results on the performance of the proposed video summarization system are encouraging

    Amniotic membrane as a scaffold in wound healing and diabetic foot ulcer: an experimental technique and recommendations

    Background: Human amniotic membrane has been used clinically in a variety of applications for over the past 100 years and produced a significant amount of data in multiple areas of medicine. Its clinical usage ranges from wound coverage for burn victims to healing of the conjunctiva after pterygium repair. The amniotic membrane natural properties provide an easy to use, safe option for various medical applications. There is need to develop a method for storage of amniotic membrane which can retain the biological properties and as well have long shelf life too.Methods: The experimental technique was standardized for cryopreservation of amniotic membrane. For this, amniotic membrane was obtained from mothers who had delivered through caesarean section with their consent.Results: The standardized protocol for cryopreservation of amniotic membrane was found to be safe and preserved amniotic membrane is expected to have long shelf life.  Conclusions: The advantages associated with amniotic membrane such as easily available, inexpensive, non-immunogenic and antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory properties make it a suitable graft to be used in wound healing and diabetic foot ulcers

    Mn-Doped ZnSe Quantum Dots as Fluorimetric Mercury Sensor

    Quantum dots (QDs), because of their exciting optical properties, have been explored as alternative fluorescent sensors to conventional organic fluorophores which are routinely employed for the detection of various analytes via fluorometry. QD probes can detect toxic metal ions, anions, organic molecules with good selectivity and sensitivity. This chapter investigates the synthesis of Mn-doped ZnSe QDs using nucleation-doping strategy. The as-synthesized QDs were characterized by various analytical tools such as ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) absorption, photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy, X-ray diffractometry (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). It was found that Mn doping of QDs significantly increases the PL intensity. The PL of the resulting QDs was examined in the presence of different metal ions to check its selective response. Among the various metal ions, Hg2+ exhibits a drastic quenching of the QD’s emission intensity. A Stern-Volmer plot of [Hg2+] sensing using the as-synthesized QDs showed linearity in the range of 0–30 × 10−6 ML−1 with the regression coefficient R2 = 0.99. The detection limit was found to be 6.63 × 10−7 ML−1. Thus, the present Mn-doped ZnSe QDs represent a simple, non-toxic fluorescent probe for the qualitative and quantitative detection of mercury ions in aqueous samples

    Expression of Lineage Transcription Factors Identifies Differences in Transition States of Induced Human Oligodendrocyte Differentiation

    Oligodendrocytes (OLs) are critical for myelination and are implicated in several brain disorders. Directed differentiation of human-induced OLs (iOLs) from pluripotent stem cells can be achieved by forced expression of different combinations of the transcription factors SOX10 (S), OLIG2 (O), and NKX6.2 (N). Here, we applied quantitative image analysis and single-cell transcriptomics to compare different transcription factor (TF) combinations for their efficacy towards robust OL lineage conversion. Compared with S alone, the combination of SON increases the number of iOLs and generates iOLs with a more complex morphology and higher expression levels of myelin-marker genes. RNA velocity analysis of individual cells reveals that S generates a population of oligodendrocyte-precursor cells (OPCs) that appear to be more immature than those generated by SON and to display distinct molecular properties. Our work highlights that TFs for generating iOPCs or iOLs should be chosen depending on the intended application or research question, and that SON might be beneficial to study more mature iOLs while S might be better suited to investigate iOPC biology

    Intercropping studies with annual crops

    This paper tries to illustrate how beneficial interactions between crops can be exploited to increase the overall output of a cropping system. Growth studies with sorghum/pigeonpea and millet/groundnut are described to show how intercropping systems can achieve much larger yields than sole crops by using environmental resources more fully over time or more efficiently in space. Data from moisture stress studies are presented to illustrate that these advantages of intercropping can be even greater under stress conditions. Possible nitrogen benefits from legumes in intercropping systems are discussed with particular reference to a study on maize/groundnut. Weed, pest and disease control are considered and some effects of a sorghum intercrop on the incidence of pod borer and wilt disease in pigeonpea are described. Evidence for improved yield stability in intercropping systems is provided from a review of 94 experiments on sorghum/pigeonpea. It is emphasized that intercropping is especially beneficial to the small farmer in the low-input/high-risk environment of the developing areas of the world but some brief comments are made on its applicability in more developed conditions

    Plumbagin inhibits invasion and migration of breast and gastric cancer cells by downregulating the expression of chemokine receptor CXCR4

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Increasing evidence indicates that the interaction between the CXC chemokine receptor-4 (CXCR4) and its ligand CXCL12 is critical in the process of metastasis that accounts for more than 90% of cancer-related deaths. Thus, novel agents that can downregulate the CXCR4/CXCL12 axis have therapeutic potential in inhibiting cancer metastasis.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>In this report, we investigated the potential of an agent, plumbagin (5-hydroxy-2-methyl-1, 4-naphthoquinone), for its ability to modulate CXCR4 expression and function in various tumor cells using Western blot analysis, DNA binding assay, transient transfection, real time PCR analysis, chromatin immunoprecipitation, and cellular migration and invasion assays.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>We found that plumbagin downregulated the expression of CXCR4 in breast cancer cells irrespective of their HER2 status. The decrease in CXCR4 expression induced by plumbagin was not cell type-specific as the inhibition also occurred in gastric, lung, renal, oral, and hepatocellular tumor cell lines. Neither proteasome inhibition nor lysosomal stabilization had any effect on plumbagin-induced decrease in CXCR4 expression. Detailed study of the underlying molecular mechanism(s) revealed that the regulation of the downregulation of CXCR4 was at the transcriptional level, as indicated by downregulation of mRNA expression, inhibition of NF-κB activation, and suppression of chromatin immunoprecipitation activity. In addition, using a virtual, predictive, functional proteomics-based tumor pathway platform, we tested the hypothesis that NF-κB inhibition by plumbagin causes the decrease in CXCR4 and other metastatic genes. Suppression of CXCR4 expression by plumbagin was found to correlate with the inhibition of CXCL12-induced migration and invasion of both breast and gastric cancer cells.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Overall, our results indicate, for the first time, that plumbagin is a novel blocker of CXCR4 expression and thus has the potential to suppress metastasis of cancer.</p

    Registration of ICPL 87 pigeonpea

    ICPL87 pigeonpea (Cajanus cajan) was developed by pedigree selection from the cross ICPX73052 (T21 X JA277), made in 1973. In various Indian trials, it outyielded the control, UPAS120, by up to 50%, giving 3700-5200 kg/ha. ICPL87 matures 110-130 days after sowing. Plants are smaller than in conventional longer duration types and suitable for high density (330 000 plants/ha) cultivation; they are 80-90 cm tall and semispreading, with a determinate growth habit. ICPL87 is tolerant of Fusarium udum wilt and compensates strongly during the second flush for damage caused by pod borer (Heliothis armigera [Helicoverpa armigera])
